Are you struggling to afford your internet? Then did you know that help is available for those on eligible benefits through what's known as a ‘Social Tariff’.

Social Tariffs are discounted broadband and mobile deals for people on Universal Credit and other benefits, allowing you to access the internet but at a lower price.

These tariffs are delivered in the same way as normal packages, just at a lower price. With rising living costs, and increasing number of broadband and mobile companies are offering social tariffs to help customers on low incomes. Yet surprisingly only around 7% of eligible people in the region are taking advantage of these discounts.

Who is eligible?

This differs on the internet provider. But if you, or a member of your household, is currently in receipt of any of the following benefits, you should be eligible:

  • Jobseeker’s allowance
  • Universal credit/income support
  • Employment & support allowance
  • Pension credit
  • Personal Independence Payment (PIP/Attendance allowance)

What are the benefits?

  • It is cheaper than a regular package so will save you money. Current prices range from £10 to £25 per month.
  • You can switch at any time – usually free of charge.
  • It costs next-to-nothing to set up. If you do have to pay any set up costs, these should only be small. Your provider should tell you before you sign up.
  • It costs nothing to leave. You won’t pay a fee to leave the tariff before the end of your contract.

How to get a social tariff?

A large number of broadband providers now offer discounted social tariff products, with some offering deals from as low as £15 per month. This could represent a saving of more than £180 per year, which is around 50% compared to the average cost of broadband.

All you need to do, is call your provider, ask if they offer a Social Tariff and ask to switch.

So, don't miss out, make sure you're getting the discount you're entitled to.
