Shared Ownership is a good alternative to renting if you can’t afford the larger deposit to buy a house outright.

Shared Ownership allows you to buy a share in a home and pay a reduced rent on the share that you don’t own. Shares range from 25% to 75% initially, with the option for you to buy more once you’ve moved in.

The more deposit you have could means you can buy more of a share, which could bring your monthly rent payments down.

As part of the government’s Affordable Homes Programme 2021 – 2026, some changes to Shared Ownership were introduced; in a challenging market, it’s hoped that the changes will help more people get a foot onto the property ladder.

Rent to Buy

Also known as ‘Rent to Save’ or ‘Intermediate Rent’. The Rent to Buy Scheme is for those who feel a mortgage is out of reach at the moment, because it’s too hard to save for a deposit.

It’s a simple idea, Rent to Buy lets you rent now, buy later! The scheme allows you to rent a brand new home with a tenancy agreement, at a reduced rate (80% of local market rent) for five years, giving you the chance to save for a deposit. If Open Door by Halton Housing decide to sell after 5 years, they will give you first refusal to buy the home you’ve come to know and love.
