Preventing Falls from Windows using Window Restrictors

At Halton Housing, the safety and well-being of our customers is our top priority. As part of our ongoing commitment to raising awareness of potential dangers around the home, we want to draw attention to the issue of falls from windows and the crucial role that window restrictors can play in preventing accidents.
The Importance of Window Safety
Recent reports from around the UK have highlighted the devastating consequences of falls from height, particularly involving children under the age of five. Tragically, these incidents can happen in just seconds, often when a child is exploring their surroundings or leaning against a window. We want to ensure that every home provides a safe environment for children to grow and thrive.
What Are Window Restrictors?
Window restrictors are safety devices that connect to window frames, preventing windows from being opened past a specific point. They typically allow the window to be opened by 100 mm or less. If your home has window restrictors installed, we strongly advise that they remain in place and are not disengaged. We also recommend that window restrictors should not be easy to override and should be lockable to reduce the potential for tampering.
Recommended Precautions to Prevent Falls
- Keep windows locked or use restrictors that prevent them from opening more than 100 mm.
- Position furniture away from windows to prevent children from climbing.
- Do not rely on insect screens to prevent falls—they are not designed for this purpose.
- Always supervise young children when windows are open.
