A mutual exchange is when tenants mutually decide to swap homes. When you exchange, you take on the home of the other person and they take on your home.
An exchange can help you get a new property and does not involve going on the housing transfer register.
Before a mutual exchange can take place, all parties involved must gain permission from their landlord first.
Please note if you have made any alterations to the fixtures and fittings of your home without landlord consent, they will often require reinstating to original specification before an exchange can be authorised.
Who Can I Exchange With?
You can exchange with any other tenant of a social landlord within the United Kingdom. This includes other housing associations, housing trusts and local authorities.
How do I find a new home?
Many tenants register on Home Swapper, a site (independent from Halton Housing) where tenants can advertise and search for a property to exchange. It also provides a secure platform to exchange messages with potential exchange tenants. Visit the Home Swapper website for more information www.homeswapper.co.uk
If you are looking to exchange in Halton, there is an existing Facebook Exchange page where some tenants advertise their homes. To join the group, simply visit the Facebook page and request to join. (please note this page is not endorsed or managed in anyway by Halton Housing)
