A Story of Partnership and Protection: Supporting a Vulnerable Resident subject to financial abuse
When our Neighbourhoods team received a call from a concerned family member, it was clear this was an urgent situation.
A customer was facing challenges with alcohol addiction and mental health issues and was being financially and emotionally targeted by individuals in the area. This troubling situation resulted in substantial sums of money being taken from his bank account, leading to severe emotional distress and withdrawal from his support network.
Over the past year, the impact became so severe that the resident had stopped communicating altogether.
The family had taken multiple steps to protect him:
- Installing CCTV at his door to monitor unwanted visitors
- Changing his door phone and phone number
- Adding a firebox after an arson incident
- Managing his bank transactions to monitor unauthorized withdrawals.
Despite these efforts, the abuse persisted.
With the commitment and joint effort of Halton Housing, health services, and the local police, we were able to relocate the customer to a secure new home through our High Priority process. The new home, chosen for its enhanced security, provided the safety and stability he needed to move forward, now closer to his family and free from the risks he previously faced.
We’re pleased to report that our customer is now thriving. His new environment has given him the peace of mind and support to begin his journey of recovery from addiction and mental health struggles. The family has expressed immense gratitude for the swift, compassionate response from Halton Housing, which was instrumental in achieving a positive outcome.
This story stands as a testament to the power of partnership and timely intervention. By working together, we’ve not only helped protect a vulnerable customer but have also contributed to his ongoing journey to a healthier, more secure future. We commend the dedication of everyone involved and are honoured to be part of such life-changing work in our community.
