The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) is urging hundreds of thousands of pensioners to apply for Pension Credit, a benefit that could provide an average of £3,900 per year.

With as many as 880,000 pensioners missing out on Pension Credit, the Pension Credit Week of Action seeks to raise awareness and encourage more claims. This year, those who qualify for Pension Credit will also be automatically eligible for the Winter Fuel Payment, providing further support during the colder months.

If you have a retired loved one, neighbour or friend we are encouraging you to help them check their eligibility and apply for Pension Credit. Over the coming weeks, we will be issuing advice and support on how to apply for pension credit to those who need it. You can also find out more about pension credit by keeping an eye on our social media pages. The deadline to submit a backdated claim and receive the Winter Fuel Payment is 21 December. Checking your eligibility is quick, easy and can be checked online.

The Winter Fuel Payment is an annual tax-free payment for households that include someone born on or before 22 September 1958 (for 2024-25). To be eligible for these payments you must also be claiming one of the following:

Claire Creed, Senior Welfare Benefits and Money Advice Officer, said:

“We know many of our pension age customers may not be receiving pension credit despite being eligible. We want to reach out, signpost and support these customers as a priority.

It is crucial that all residents who want to access the Winter Fuel Payments are aware of the recent changes.

I encourage everyone to familiarise themselves with the changes so you’re aware of if and how they may affect you”.
