We have been awarded Bronze Carbon Literate accreditation by The Carbon Literacy Trust, as part of our commitment towards sustainability and drive to become net-zero by 2050 or sooner.

Carbon Literacy training is “an awareness of the carbon dioxide costs and impacts of everyday activities, and the ability to reduce emissions, on an individual, community and organisational basis”, and a Carbon Literate Organisation (CLO), therefore, is an organisation that is making a substantial commitment to Carbon Literacy.

The training forms part of our efforts to reduce carbon emissions, by educating colleagues on how they can make changes within their roles and personal lives.

The award means we have shown we are serious about maintaining a ‘low carbon culture’ by becoming one of 70 carbon literate organisations in the UK and Ireland.

We're now working towards the Silver accreditation. The Silver accreditation requires 15% of the workforce to be certified as carbon literate. Over the next 12 months, all colleagues will receive the training, along with meeting several other requirements, working towards achieving Gold accreditation.

Georgina Patel, Halton Housing’s Decarbonisation Strategic Lead, said: “We’re delighted to be joining other businesses that have been recognised for their hard work by The Carbon Literacy Trust.

“Colleagues who have completed the training so far have been really engaged in the sessions and have shown a real commitment to what they have learned by following up with some creative and ambitious personal pledges. We are now looking forward to delivering this vital training to more colleagues at Halton Housing and making even more of our colleagues carbon literate, as well as continuing our work towards achieving the Silver Carbon Literate Organisation accreditation.”

Neil McGrath, Deputy Group Chief Executive & Chief Financial Officer, said: “Educating our colleagues with Carbon Literacy training means that not only will they be able to make greener choices in their personal lives, but they will also be in a better position to make more informed, lasting changes in every stage of their role, to make Halton Housing greener for years to come.

“I’d encourage other housing associations and registered providers to engage with Carbon Literacy training and discover what climate change means for you and your organisation. We face a huge challenge, so completing this training is a simple first step to becoming greener and committing to reduce our carbon footprint.”
