Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service holds high-rise training exercise at Churchill Mansions
A Runcorn tower block hosted a training exercise this week when Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service led an exercise to test their response to a high-rise fire.
Emergency service staff, three fire engines, and support vehicles descended on unoccupied flats at the Halton Housing-owned, Churchill Mansions in Runcorn Old Town, on Tuesday 13th February as part of the exercise.
In the fictional scenario for the training, a fire started in a flat on the fifth floor before spreading across the corridor to the next flat, both of which had one occupant unaccounted for. Smoke from the fire then spread to a flat above but, because of a communication issue, it was not known which flat posing a very realistic scenario the fire service may face.
The training day involved a simulation of a fire, with the trainees blindfolded to simulate a smoke-filled environment.
Michael Neilson, Halton Housing Fire Safety Manager said: “The safety and protection of our residents is our top priority. That's why we are proud to partner with Cheshire Fire & Rescue Service to prepare for high-rise emergencies, however unlikely they may be.”
Kev O’Neill, Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service Watch Manager said: Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service firefighters train routinely to be ready in the event of any situation. This opportunity to carry out a high-rise exercise was an ideal refresher for our crews to practice their extensive range of skills."
The 11-storey building contains 44 flats and is the only high-rise block in the Halton borough.
