My Journey into Human Resources
How often do you get asked the question “So what is it that you do?”, whether it’s at a networking event for work, a social event or catching up with family that you’ve not seen for years.. it's one of those questions that gives us a real insight into a person.
My answer? “I work in Human Resources” which then leads me on to how I got here, in my role as HR apprentice for Halton Housing.
I started my journey in recruitment after leaving college, the fast-paced role and need to be super organised was right up my street and I loved the challenge of helping match candidates with recruiters and vice versa, and making the calls to say “you’ve got the job” was always a highlight for me. But, I soon realised that the sales-driven environment wasn’t quite for me but helping people achieve their goals, and being the best versions of themselves at work, still very much was.
Deciding whether to make a move from recruitment wasn’t an easy one, but it was through chatting about this career dilemma with a friend who suggested that my skillset would be well suited to a job in HR (Human Resources). Apparently, my ability to stay calm and level-headed even in the most difficult of situations would stand me in good stead and I’d get to follow my passion for people.
I’ve been an apprentice for just over a year now, and I still feel incredibly lucky to have secured this role at Halton Housing. The People Team has shared invaluable knowledge that has helped me shape my skills and experience throughout my apprenticeship. My team has been incredibly supportive—not only professionally, but also in boosting my confidence and encouraging me to believe in myself.
Halton Housing has made a significant investment in my development by encouraging many CPD (Continuing Professional Development) activities, such as training, courses, and providing insightful exposure to the housing sector. These experiences have been vital in broadening my understanding of HR and giving me a well-rounded view of the industry.
One of the things I appreciate most about the CIPD course is how well it fits around my other commitments. I’m able to study one day per week at Warrington & Vale Royal College, while spending the remaining four days in the workplace, learning the practical elements of HR. This balance has allowed me to apply what I’m learning in real time and further solidify my understanding of the subject.
While at college, I’ve been incredibly fortunate to be guided by two exceptional tutors—Sarah Green and Jill Murphy. Their support, approachability, and patience have been invaluable to me, and I can’t thank them enough for helping me navigate this learning process.
Looking ahead, my goal is to complete the Level 3 Human Resource Support Apprenticeship and continue gaining valuable experience within Halton Housing.
In September 2025, I plan to pursue the Level 5 People Professional Apprenticeship, which will allow me to achieve a CIPD Level 5 Associate Diploma in People Management – an internationally recognised qualification that will bring me one step closer to my long-term career ambitions in HR.
